Mediterranean Groundwater Working Group (link to the new page)

The Mediterranean Groundwater WG (MED-EUWI Groundwater WG) is one of the three thematic groups of the Mediterranean Joint Process between the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the Mediterranean Component of the EU Water Initiative and in parallel, a Drafting Group (GW5) of the WG C (WG on Groundwater), which is part of the EU Common Implementation Strategy of the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC).

The objective of the Mediterranean Groundwater WG is to exchange experiences, share common challenges and develop synergies between EU and non EU countries of the Mediterranean region, aiming at the adoption of a common vision on groundwater resources management, based on the Water Framework Directive (WFD) approach and objectives and the regional conditions.

The final output of the first phase of the Mediterranean Groundwater WG will be a report (Mediterranean document on Groundwater) which will include technical specifications and specific recommendations on issues related to groundwater resources management in the Mediterranean, based on the WFD approach and the experience of the EU and non-EU countries of the region as well as the regional and international organisations. A draft report has already been prepared (Draft Version 31/05/06) by the members of the WG.

The specific objectives, work plan, timetable, etc. are described in the latest Mandate (version 3/5/06) of the WG.
