Project Development of an interregional network of monitoring of the quality of coastal water by bio-integrators for the durable protection of the Western Mediterranean

The purpose of the Mytilos project is the development of an interregional costal water quality monitoring network through biological integrators (mussels), for the sustainable protection of the Western Mediterranean Sea.

Mytilos is actively involved in the integration, standardisation and harmonisation of activities among Member States and neighbouring countries. Member countries associated with this project are France, Italy, Greece, Spain ; third countries associated with Mytilos are Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia.

Objectives

The purpose of the Mytilos project is the development of an interregional costal water quality monitoring network through biological integrators (mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis), for the sustainable protection of the Western Mediterranean Sea.

This evaluation and monitoring network of the coastal contamination carries out an active biomonitoring through caged mussels. This caging method has been implemented on the French coasts since 1996 (100 cages).

This goal will be achieved through :
  - setting up a network of partners with the same methodology,
  - implementing a standard protocol in the Western Mediterranean, including its dissemination among the Maghreb partners,
  - evaluating the chemical quality of the Mediterranean Sea as identified in the Framework Directive in the field of water policy (directive 2000/60/CE).
Results

The project’s main expected results will be the following :
  Mediterranean chemical pollution benchmarking,
  protocol analyses intercalibration,
  permanent alert network (made up of specialists, regional or national laboratories, etc.),
  information and publication of summarised data through the web site (including public and private access) : http://mytilos.tvt.fr

This way, thanks to information provided by this biological integrators network, regional or national authorities will be able to make knowingly preventive or post-accident decisions related to environmental disasters.

    The total Mytilos budget is €1,516,246.67, of which €800,000 are funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

    ERDF resources are mainly used to cofinance: productive investment leading to the creation or maintenance of jobs; Infrastructure; local development initiatives and the business activities of small and medium-sized enterprises.

    In practice, all development areas are covered: transport, communication technologies, energy, the environment, research and innovation, social infrastructure, training, urban redevelopment and the conversion of industrial sites, rural development, the fishing industry, tourism and culture.
