Project Arab Integrated Water Resources Management Network

AWARENET, the Arab Integrated Water Resources Management Network, seeks to improve awareness among professionals working in water and waterrelated institutions about Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and to strengthen technical, institutional and managerial capacity for the application of IWRM principles in the Arab region. AWARENET is a regional network under the umbrella of Cap-Net, founded in Beirut, Lebanon in 2002. It is currently hosted within ESCWA. Target stakeholders in the region include water ministries, municipalities, universities, training and research institutions, NGOs and others.

AWARENET’s formal structure governing administrative, substantive and financial affairs as well as membership is not yet fully established. A network constitution is currently being developed, and options for governing and hosting the network outside of ESCWA have been discussed. Until now, AWARENET is fully dependent on external sources to support individual activities. There is a pressing need to identify and implement ways of how the network could and should operate, how it can gain more independence and how it can grow and be sustainable. BGR and ESCWA are supporting AWARENET in this process.
