Water & Environment 2012 CIWEM'S ANNUAL CONFERENCE

When it came to power in May 2010 the UK Coalition Government pledged to be the greenest government ever. We have been promised a 'green revolution' for a green economy, green jobs and for low-carbon living ……… but how far have we come? What more do we need to do? And how do our international counterparts compare?

In March 2012, CIWEM will hold a two-day conference that will address multidisciplinary issues across all areas of the global water and environment sector. It will have the key theme - "Green Revolution" and the conference will consider our progress towards achieving this.

This conference is looking to speakers to inspire and demonstrate ideas and innovations that will enable us to achieve a greener and more sustainable future.

Aim

The aim of the conference is to challenge and inspire the water and environment community by sharing knowledge and best practice, which is at the heart of meeting key global challenges for a low-carbon future. There will be a mix of keynote speakers, offered papers, exhibitions and networking opportunities that will make this the key event for water and environment professionals.

This conference is organised on an academic model, where there is a call for presentations and speakers will be selected on that basis by the conference programme committee.

Show how issues are developing and shaping future agendas
Are challenging

The Format of Submissions:

Prospective speakers should submit an abstract via the online submission form which can be found on the CMS website http://www.coastms.co.uk/conferences/448

All the speakers will pay the conference fee and this will be broadly in line with current CIWEM one day events.

32nd International Geographical Congress: CfP for integrative approaches to water resource management, IGU 2012

The 32nd International Geographical Congress in Cologne focuses scientific attention on the core themes of humanity. Researchers from around the world are expected in Cologne in 2012.
Geographers bring the wide-ranging perspectives and methodology of their subject to bear on four major thematic complexes and contribute to the solution of urgent scientific and socio-political issues – bringing research down to earth:

Global Change and Globalisation
Society and Environment
Risks and Conflicts
Urbanisation and Demographic Change

Both climate change and socio-economic development will significantly modify the supply and consumption of water in future, and consequently stress existing management patterns and regulations of conflicts of interest. Against this background, water management practices and strategies have to be fundamentally revisited.

Water management is regarded as the expression of a historically evolving interaction between biophysical properties and social relations.

The regulation of these socio-ecological dynamics is the core of water management, which shapes the waterscape, i.e. where water is tapped and stored, and how it is distributed to the different water users according to socially negotiated rules. The aim of this session is to provide space to discuss more integrative and alternative approaches to water management.

We especially welcome conceptual or theoretical contributions to the following areas:

- Interdisciplinary studies tackling questions of water management in times of global change, which focus on the integration of physical and human geographical perspectives: What are suitable approaches to integrate research on water resources, water use systems, and water governance (from integrative modeling to qualitative bridging concepts) - Scales of water management: What are appropriate scales of water management – river basins vs political units? What are potential and limitations to governance approaches such as IWRM?
- Stakeholder dialogue: How can stakeholders be fruitfully involved in research or projects related to more sustainable water management? What are enabling or hindering factors in processes of transdisciplinary co-production of knowledge and social learning?

Empirical case studies can be from the Global North or South in order to enable a comparison of approaches, experiences and best practices.

The "2^nd International Conference and Exhibition on Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation (SWSSC2012)" will be held at Cairo International Conference Center (CICC), 27-29 February 2012, Cairo, Egypt.

Course information

Wetland Management

One of the difficulties identified in wetland management is the division of management responsibilities between different administrative authorities in a river basin. This often results in fragmented and competitive approaches to water resources planning and management. The management of wetlands therefore requires a multidisciplinary approach that integrates the technical, economic, environmental, social and legal aspects of water management which does not end at country borders but needs to be carried out at a basin scale.

Aims and objectives

The primary condition for achieving integrated wetland management is the willingness of sectoral stakeholders to work together. To achieve the necessary cooperation, stakeholders in a catchment area need to be able to understand each other clearly. Steps to achieve understanding of the various views, and to explore how far such separate views can be shared, will be one of the main issues covered within the International Training of Trainers on Wetland Management, a course focusing on the facilitation of multistakeholder processes and curriculum development (ICWM-TOT).

The ICWM-TOT aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for curriculum development in the field of wetland management in their own region. The course will focus on the multi-stakeholder processes that play an important role in wetland management and the need for transboundary and cross-sectoral co-operation to manage the natural resources of a river basin and its wetlands.

Programme topics

Concepts in wetland and river basin management Concepts in wetland and river basin management (ecological, social and economic perspective) as well as ecosystem approach, Ramsar, CBD and other international agreements.

Facilitation of multi-stakeholder processes Multi-stakeholder processes, tools and techniques to support the facilitation of multi-stakeholder processes in wetland management, public participation, stakeholder involvement in decision making and conflict management.

Fieldwork wetland management

Wetland management, stakeholder analysis and public participation in practice.

Adult education and social learning

Participatory learning principles, learning styles, the learning cycle, educational psychology, raising awareness, training skills.

Curriculum development

Curriculum development, development of a training programme for wetland managers.

The course will be interactive with a high degree of personal contributions by the participants. Besides lectures the course will include fieldwork, technical and social excursions. The ICWM-TOT will provide the opportunity of professional networking fostered by the institutions organising the course, as a follow-up after attending the training.

Course organisation

The course is organised by Wageningen UR's Centre for Development Innovation, formerly known as Wageningen International. Experts from other leading organisations in Integrated Water Resources Management and Wetland Management are aimed to be involved in the programme as well (UNESCO-IHE, Deltares, Tour du Valat, ITC, Wetlands International etc.). The training is endorsed by the Ramsar Secretariat.

Who can participate?

The ICWM-TOT has been designed for (future) trainers in wetland management. The course programme is suitable for wetland managers and land use planners, policy makers, consultants, researchers and NGO staff who have affinity with training. The course will be relevant to participants from all climatic zones.

Requirements for admission

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

* have at least a Bachelor level qualification or equivalent educational background;

* have at least two years of professional experience;

* be involved in wetland management and preferably:

* assigned to capacity building in wetland management;

* be fluent in spoken and written English.

Make sure that you clearly indicate the usefulness of this training in your application form, and outline your current or future involvement in water resources or wetland management and capacity development. We are aware that many of you have applied already for several times in a row, if this is the case could you please indicate this in your application form?

Certificate

Participants will be granted a Certificate of Attendance.

Fees and venue

If you cannot find your country back in the NFP list, the fee for this course is € 3600, but do not hesitate to apply because we might find the necessary budget for your participation through other sources. Costs include administration costs, lecture materials and field trips, but excludes board and lodging and travel expenses. Participants will be accommodated at the 'Hof van Wageningen', Wageningen, The Netherlands, on basis of full board and lodging. Prices are available on request.

The admission deadline for application directly to Wageningen UR's Centre for Development Innovation, with funding other than through an NFP fellowship or MENA Scholarship, is 11 May 2012. Early application is recommended!

As from January 1^st, 2011 the application procedure for NFP Fellowships has been changed. Applications for a NFP Fellowship should be submitted online through the Nuffic System, Scholarships Online (SOL). Please note the deadline to apply for the NFP fellowship is 1 October 2011 (but apply before that as you need to gather some documents!)

After receiving your application by our institute, soon we will send you an Admission letter. To apply for an NFP Fellowship, you do NOT need our Admission letter.
