Event Workshop on Legal Aspects of Water Sector Reforms

IELRC is currently implementing a 3-year research project entitled ‘Legal Issues Related to Water Sector Restructuring: Human Rights, Environment, Agriculture and Socio-Economic Aspects'. This project is a research partnership between a research team based in Geneva and a research team based in Delhi. It is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF). IELRC is organising the first workshop in the context of this research project entitled ‘Water, Law and the Commons' in December 2006 in New Delhi. Following this first workshop in India, we will be organising a second workshop in Geneva to analyse some of the international aspects of water law reforms, as they apply to developing countries such as India and in a broader context. We invite papers for this second workshop. It is open to all academics, policy makers and activists working across the spectrum of water law; water resources conservation; and water and environment related issues. The objectives of the workshop are to provide a platform for discussions concerning some of the most important international legal and policy issues arising in the context of ongoing water sector reforms particularly in developing countries. It seeks to examine international norms and standards that have been put in place or have been evolving in the context of water law reforms. This workshop is specifically seeking to ensure a broader understanding of the conceptual framework informing existing water law and ongoing law reforms. Its focus is also to bring about proposals for reform towards more sustainable and comprehensive water management.
