Event 4th European Forum on Eco-Innovation: ‘Unlocking Global Market Opportunities’

The 4th European Forum on Eco-Innovation in Vienna will focus on ‘Unlocking globa market opportunities’. The European Forums on Eco-Innovation bring together businesses, policymakers, bankers and academics to share perspectives on environmental technologies in support of the EU Environmental Technology Action Plan (ETAP).

The EU is a major driving force in eco-industries with almost one third of world turnover, in a market that is forecast to double by 2020. - How can EU companies further improve their position on the global market for environmental technologies? What are the benefits and risks? Which new business models and forms of cooperation does this market generate?

Experienced EU practitioners and business leaders will discuss these questions during a two-day conference. The list of high-level speakers includes:

Keynote address by:

  • Mr Jeremy Rifkin, president of the Foundation on Economic Trends and best-seller author;
  • Mr Josef Proell, Austrian Minister for the Environment;
  • Mrs Maud Olofsson, Swedish Minister for Enterprise and Energy.

The Vienna Forum, organised jointly by Austria, Sweden and the European Commission, will highlight the potential and the challenges for businesses in unlocking the vast global market for eco-innovation.

Working sessions will bring key insights from business leaders and EU practitioners who have been successful in breaking into global markets. Furthermore, experts will focus on the areas of intense activity that bring distinctive opportunities to businesses requiring new approaches such as adaptation to climate change, resource efficiency and sustainable cities.

Amongst the key topics for discussion will be obstacles to increased global market access and ways to tackle these. Delegates will develop a set of key recommendations for European and national policy makers to help achieve faster opening up of global markets for European environmental technology businesses.

Eco-Innovation is a cornerstone of EU strategy, strongly supported by succeeding EU presidencies, and offers a major opportunity for the European economy for which Ecoindustries constitute a significant part. Their current EU turnover is €227 billion, accounting for 2.2% of GDP and generating 3.4 million jobs. Europe is a global leader in eco-industries, with approximately 1/3 of the total market share and more than 50% in water and waste management. The EU is championing eco-innovation practices in amongst other construction, food and drink, private transport and recycling. The whole environmental technology market is forecast to double by 2020 to some €2,300 billion.

The 4th European Forum on Eco-innovation: Unlocking global market opportunities is part of the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) and will be in parallel to Envietech 2008, an international congress also focused on market opportunities in the areas of environmental technology and renewable energy.
