Event Workshop “Conflict Prevention and Climate Change” & Dialogue Forum senior experts

The Madariaga European Foundation and the Folke Bernadotte Academy invites you to participate in its workshop “Conflict Prevention and Climate Change”, to be held on 24th April, Thursday, in Brussels in the premises of the Council of the EU. Organised with the support of the Slovenian Presidency, and in close cooperation with the General Secretariat of the Council of the EU, the European Commission and the European Peace Building Liaison Office (EPLO), this workshop will gather international representatives of international organisations to facilitate multilateral cooperation and promote strong partnerships.

Being aware of the risks climate change represents for our societies, confidence and peace can also benefit from a facilitated co-operation. This workshop aims to address the main security risks as well as the role of climate change as a cause or an exacerbating factor of conflict, and to foresee possible early warning strategies. We would be honoured if you would accept to take part in the discussion, and we will also be happy to welcome you at this debate. Please find enclosed a draft programme for your information.

As a follow-up, on the 25th April, there will be a restricted event, within the framework of a Dialogue Forum. Senior officials of selected organisations will be invited to exchange views on the risks and ways to address the security implications and development needs related to the climate change in Africa.

These meetings will launch the two-year common learning programme “Conflict Prevention in Practice”. This programme, building on the previous successful cycle of workshops on “Conflict Prevention – Creating a leading role for the European Union”, seeks to reinforce the cooperation already created, and to evolve to a closer interaction between representatives of the international community towards more concrete dialogue.
