Event Round Table Discussion: Climate Change, Impact to the Environment and Mitigation Actions

The Cyprus Institute in the framework of the ‘Future Earth’ Regional Workshop for the Middle East and North Africa and on the occasion of the World Environment Day is organizing a Round Table Discussion entitled ‘Climate Change, Impact to the Environment and Mitigation Actions’. The discussion will take place on Wednesday, 5 June 2013, at17:30 at Hilton Hotel, Nicosia (Ballroom A).

Prof. Demosthenis Asimakopoulos, Professor at the Department of Physics at the University of Athens and former Rector will contribute to the Round Table Discussion by commenting on the addressed issues. The event will bring together representatives from all the political parliamentary parties. The participants will discuss the necessary actions and decisions that should be implemented to address climate change, reduction of air pollution, the destruction of the environment and the adoption of a sustainable development model for Cyprus. 

The speaker’s panel includes the Members of the Parliament Mr. Adamos Adamou – AKEL, Mr. Prodromos Prodromou - DHSY, Mr. Sophoclis Fittis – DHKO, Mrs. Roula Mavronikola – EDEK, Mr. George Perdikis – Cyprus Green Party and Mrs. Soula Kythreotou Zavou – Member of the Political Bureau - EVROKO.

‘Future Earth’ (http://www.icsu.org/future-earth) is a 10-year international research initiative aiming to develop the knowledge for responding effectively to the risks and opportunities of global environmental change and for supporting transformation towards global sustainability in the coming decades. To this end, ‘Future Earth’ will promote the engagement of researchers across all fields of knowledge, policy-makers, businesses and civil society in the definition of research priorities.

The Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC) of The Cyprus Institute conducts scientific research in the fields of energy, environment, climate and water resources in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean region. One of the major goals of the Center is to provide scientific solutions to the challenges our region is facing and on the impacts of climate change. CyI is a major crossroad for research between Cyprus, Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East and North Africa and serves as a gateway between EU and the region.
