TIGER Workshop 2013: Achievements Review and Future Planning
In 2002, responding to the urgent need for action in Africa expressed at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), the European Space Agency (ESA), within the context of the Committee of Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS), launched the TIGER initiative.
The overall scope is to assist African countries to overcome problems faced in the collection, analysis and use of water related geo-information by exploiting the advantages of Earth Observation (EO) technology.
Since its launch, the TIGER initiative has involved 250 African Researchers, and more than 100 stakeholder institutions in various service demonstration or pre-operational projects (more information can be found at : http://www.tiger.esa.int/).
A special part of the initiative is the TIGER Capacity Building Facility (TCBF), which organizes the capacity building actions and events including biannual workshops for the whole TIGER community.
The main objectives of the workshop are to present the achievements of the different TIGER components namely the TCBF, the pre-operational TIGER-Net project and the Alcantara research fellowships. Building on its achievements in the last ten years, we aim at identifying the main strengths and weaknesses of the TIGER initiative and preparing the basis for future activities.
In this context, the TIGER Steering Committee is glad to invite you to the upcoming ‘TIGER Workshop 2013’ in Tunis.
Since its launch, the TIGER initiative has evolved thanks to the support of different African and international partners (e.g., AMCOW, AfDB, CSA, CSIR, DWAF-South Africa, UNESCO, UN-ECA among others). Lately, UNDP Cap-Net and the World Bank also joined as new partners to the TIGER Initiative. With this growing trend, the TIGER community works for a bright future.
Objective:
The objective of the TCBF workshop is to meet potential stakeholders of the TIGER initiative, to review the state of the Capacity Building Facility, the TIGER-NET project and work on the TIGER implementation strategy for the next 5 years.
Participants:
The workshop is open to all interested stakeholders. The participant list will include, among others:
• The scientists and water experts involved in the TIGER Research projects and the Regional Offices;
• African water authorities, who are already active partners in TIGER or are interest to join;
• Water experts, scientists and decision makers interested in EO technology for water resource management and related research as well as capacity building opportunities
• International organisations and development partners actively involved or collaborating with TIGER.

22 October 2013:
- Presentations by TIGER projects
- Round table discussion about the results and future opportunities.
