Event Water Conservation - Targets and Integrated Thinking

The demand for water
In the face of climate change how will the demand for water be reduced whilst still keeping enough water in rivers and streams to meet environmental  needs and in particular Water Framework Directive objectives?

How can water companies meet the OFWAT target to increase water efficiency savings by 40% from 2010/11, compared to the savings delivered  in the preceding 3 years?

Should targets be set for:
• water consumption reduction in both new and existing properties

  • leakage reduction
• prevention of ingress to sewers
  • effluent re-use/recycling
• limits on development growth in water stressed areas

If so, how should they be derived?  What should the targets be, in numerical terms?

Concerted action
Different sections of the water industry are tackling these issues but at present there doesn't appear to be concerted action

The aim of this conference is bring together the different sectors of the water industry - water resources, wastewater treatment, planning, quality -  to look at the current initiatives and explore whether a more integrated approach would be helpful; see the conference discussion document on the conference webpage.
