Financial Instrument for the Environment
(L'Instrument Financier pour l'Environnement)

LIFE, the Financial Instrument for the Environment, introduced in 1992, is one of the spearheads of the European Union's environmental policy. It cofinances projects in the European Union and some third countries bordering the Mediterranean and the Baltic Sea, as well as in EU candidate countries that have chosen to participate.

  The 3 main areas are:
  • Life Nature works to conserve natural habitats and the wild fauna and flora of European Union interest, according to the Birds and Habitats directives, thus supporting implementation of the European Union's nature conservation policy and the Natura 2000 Network.
  • LIFE Environment aims to implement Community policy and legislation on the environment in the European Union and candidate countries. This approach enables demonstration and development of new methods for the protection and the enhancement of the environment.
LIFE Environment provides funding for demonstration projects developing innovative and integrated techniques and methods that address community environmental interests. For water management, the focus is on promoting the sustainable management of groundwater and surface water - including projects addressing water management at river basin level, groundwater protection, waste water treatment, the prevention and reduction of diffuse and dispersed sources of pollution, planning and organisational aspects of water management.

In specifically looking for demonstration projects from business and industry and local authorities, the LIFE Environment programme aims to bridge the gap between research and development results and implementation. It is not directed at existing technologies or infrastructural investments, and may fund projects previously funded under EU Framework Programmes for full-scale demonstration.

  • LIFE Third Countries concerns technical assistance activities for promoting sustainable development in third countries (including Mediterranean Partner Countries). This component of the programme supports the development of environmental management capacities, both for our administrative partners outside the Union and for companies and NGOs in those countries.
