Bulgaria/Romania: Serb compensation for oil spill
Bulgaria and Romania plan to seek compensation from neighboring Serbia for
an oil spill that has polluted large swaths of the Danube River in both
countries, officials said yesterday. “There is one basic principle in
environmental protection: The one who pollutes pays,” Bulgaria’s Environment
and Waters Minister Dzhevdet Chakarov told reporters in Sofia. Romania’s
Environment Minister Sulfina Barbu had already said on Wednesday that she
would demand “financial compensation” from Belgrade.
