News Satellite project discovers groundwater in Sharjah

Dr. Farouk Al Baz, director of the Center for Remote Sensing at Boston University in Massachusetts, USA, reported that satellite images had revealed the presence of groundwater in Sharjah, one of the United Arab Emirates.

His research team will continue to use the Geographical Information System, or GIS, to update the government of Sharjah on subterranean water sources so that the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority will know exactly where to drill new wells as they are needed.

The research project for exploring ground water by using space images was launched five years ago under the directions of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. Headed by Al Baz, it was conducted with the cooperation of Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority.
