Launch of the UN-Water Activity Information System + coming soon
The new UNW-AIS+ will be expanded to include several new components to its system: “Publications,” “eTraining” and “Forums.” These encompass social networking, groups, as training tools and eLearning modules. The “eTraining” section will be the most innovative section in the new UNW-AIS+, with online lectures delivered by experts.
The UN-Water Activity Information System Plus (UNW-AIS+),
developed by UNW-DPC, is an integrated online tool for storing, updating and sharing information (web-based content, documents and multimedia) on existing
water-related projects, eTraining tools and other activities carried out by
UN-Water members, partners and associated programmes.
Now in a new test version, the new UNW-AIS+ has been expanded to include several new components to its system: in addition to the existing information about activities now included in the “Projects” section, there are new sections on “Publications,” “eTraining,” and “Forums.” These components encompass social networking, groups, as well as training tools and ELearning modules which use the Moodle learning platform.
The categories of eMaterials follow the guidelines of the priority areas laid out by UN-Water:
- Integrated water resources management
- Drinking-water, sanitation and health
- Water scarcity
- Pollution
- Transboundary waters
- Climate change and disaster risk management
- Gender and water
- Financing and valuation
- Capacity building
- Africa: a region for priority action
The “eTraining” section is the most innovative section in the new UNW-AIS+, with online lectures delivered by experts in their areas on different topics within the thematic clusters listed above. This section also contains useful related materials for workshops, such as background materials, concept notes, agendas, powerpoint presentations, photographs or videos. Individuals are invited to join the platform and can update their profile page with a photograph and personal information such as a job title or email address. Thus the “eTraining” section serves as a practical platform for workshop participants to keep in touch with each other before, during and after each workshop or training activity, allowing for easier feedback, contact and tracking of the results of individual activities.
The list of topics is constantly evolving and being updated to reflect the needs and interests of UN-Water members and partners. Current topics in the “eTraining” section are on “Safe Use of Wastewater in Agriculture” and “Water Supply and Sanitation,” among many others.
In the new “Publications” section, the intention is for this section to serve as a repository for information and links to publications from all UN-Water members and partners. Each entry can include a thumbnail of the cover, a short description of the contents, and links to the document itself on the organization’s own website.
The new section on “Forums” encompasses forums, groups, chat rooms, and social networking tools which encourage the sharing of feedback and information among UNW-AIS+ users.
Finally, the “Projects” section contains all previously existing information on activities as a result of mapping exercises of UN-Water Task Forces and Thematic Priority Areas, such as “Transboundary Waters,” “Climate Change,” and “Water Quality.
These new additions make the UNW-AIS+ an easy and accessible platform for capacity development tools to be used for sharing knowledge among UN-Water members, partners and programmes, and to engage in “learning by sharing.” It has a modular architecture and is therefore able to expand to include new features and components of use to UN-Water.
The update system will be officially launched on the 14th November.
