News CBCMed - huge response to call for proposals

Applications in response to the second call for standard projects issued by the Cross-Border Cooperation Programme in the Mediterranean (ENPI CBCMed) are worth more than 24 times the available budget of the call, with an overwhelming 1,094 grant applications submitted for consideration.

The value of the proposals submitted is €1.6 billion with a total amount of €1.4 billion ENPI contribution requested. The amount available under the call is €56.5 million.

Priorities 1 (“Promotion of socio-economic development and enhancement of territories”) and 2 (“Promotion of environmental sustainability at the basin level”) of the call received considerable interest notwithstanding the limited available funds (25% of the call budget while more than half of the proposals focus on these two Priorities). Environmental protection was also highlighted as a major challenge at Mediterranean level, with the related measure of the call (2.1 “Prevention and reduction of risk factors for the environment and enhancement of natural common heritage”) gathering the highest number of proposals.

Projects related to cultural dialogue, artistic creativity and support to local governance under Priority 4 (“Promotion of cultural dialogue and local governance”) also proved of huge interest with 43% of proposals concerning this Priority.

The response confirmed the constant commitment of the seven Mediterranean Partner Countries to the Programme, accounting for almost 43% of total actors (Applicants and partners).

Over the three calls for projects issued by the Programme, €3.3 billion of ENPI contribution were requested by almost 2,000 proposals. This is more than 18 times the overall budget dedicated to project financing, i.e. €182 million.

The programme said administrative checks of Concept Notes were ongoing. Due to the high number of proposals received, an updated calendar of the evaluation process will be soon published on the Programme website.

The ‘ENPI CBC Mediterranean Sea Basin Programme 2007/2013’ is a multilateral cross-border cooperation programme co-financed by the EU under the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument.
