News Book release: Shared Borders Shared Waters - Israeli-Palestinian and Colorado River Basin Water Challenges

The volume focuses on the role that ‘science diplomacy’ can play in resolving water challenges and compiles the expertise of a distinguished and diverse group of researchers.

This collection of papers examines water management in two of the world’s prominent arid transboundary areas - the Israeli-Palestinian region in the Middle East and the Colorado River Basin in the United States - both facing challenges of water scarcity, population growth, and economic development.

The volume focuses on the role that ‘science diplomacy’ can play in resolving water challenges and compiles the expertise of a distinguished and diverse group of researchers. Policymakers, water managers, specialists such as university researchers and consultants, and citizens—the ultimate beneficiaries or losers of public policies—will all be involved in development and implementation of sustainable solutions to the many challenges discussed in this volume. The assembled papers identify water management options and challenges and underscore that much work remains to be done.

The foreword of the book is written by UNESCO-IHE's rector András Szöllösi-Nagy: "In spite of its conflict potential water connects and does not divide giving us hope for increased cooperation to avoid that of potential conflict. For the arid areas that are the focus of this collection, the book offers the promise of the best of science diplomacy."

The collection of papers have been edited by Sharon B. Megdal, Robert G. Varady, Susanna Eden of The University of Arizona, Tucson, USA.
