News Pilot Project to Improve Irrigation Water Use in the Doukkala irrigation scheme (Morocco): Coping with water scarcity through the collective modernization of irrigation systems

A Pilot Project to improve irrigation water use in the irrigation scheme of Doukkala (Morocco) was launched in 2007. This project, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, was a pilot experience in the framework of the National Plan for Irrigation Water Conservation in Morocco (PNEEI) . The main objective of the project was to set up conditions and concrete approaches for an efficient irrigation water use, at both, farm and institutional level.

Project activities were based on i) the conversion from surface to drip irrigation on a collective basis in two pilot sites of 30-40 hectares grouping small farmers around a water reservoir, ii) the introduction of new approaches for collective irrigation management and iii) the introduction of new ways of cooperation between the Regional Agricultural Agency (ORMVAD) and the users association for the water service. The synthesis report presents the results of the project and its achievements, and it gives concrete recommendations for the implementation of the PNEEI.
