News Dr. Semia Cherif from ISSBAT, Tunisia, has received the prestigious McKee Groundwater Protection, Restoration or Sustainable Use award from the Water Environment Federation

Dr. Semia Cherif from ISSBAT, Tunisia, has received the prestigious McKee Groundwater Protection, Restoration or Sustainable Use award from the Water Environment Federation (WEF, www.wef.org), an international non-profit technical and educational water quality organization. The award was presented during a ceremony at the organization’s 86th Annual Technical Exhibition and Conference this October in Chicago, Ill.

Dr. Semia Cherif is an Associate Professor at the Institut of Applied Biological Sciences in Tunis (ISSBAT) of the Université de Tunis El Manar (Tunisia). She received her PhD from Université Louis Pasteur (Strasbourg, France) and her habilitation from Université de Tunis El Manar (Tunis, Tunisia). Dr. Semia Cherif's teaching and research include mainly air pollution and water quality – drinking, surface, used and groundwater. Dr. Semia Cherif’s significant contribution to groundwater science in her research titled “A New Approach for the Assessment of Groundwater Quality and Its Suitability for Irrigation: A Case Study of the Korba Coastal Aquifer (Tunisia, Africa),” was published in Water Environment Research, August 2012. Through this prestigious award, Dr Semia Cherif was recognized for her work on groundwater and its optimal use for irrigation. She developed a new approach that calculates the optimum amount of water required for irrigation, considering the salinity of the well water, the choice of field crops and the meteorological local conditions for evapotranspiration and rainfall. Dr. Semia Cherif’s research further determined the quantity of water needed to reach crop and soil requirements while controlling the salts brought in by irrigation waters.

Dr. Semia Cherif was honored during WEFTEC® 2013, the world’s largest annual water quality conference and exhibition. The event hosted thousands of global water quality experts and exhibiting companies at the McCormick Place in Chicago, IL, October 5-9, 2013.
