News SWIM and Horizon 2020 SM Showcases its Achievements and Lessons Learned

The SWIM-H2020 SM successfully held its final conference in Brussels on 8 April 2019, after 39-months of activities (2016-2019), with a budget of nearly 7 MEuros. Regional activities as well as national supports provided to Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia, were presented. The project aimed to contribute to reduced marine pollution and sustainable use of scarce water resources in the Med region. In this framework EMWIS Technical unit provided expertise for regional trainings (two on data management for decentralised water resources planning, one on waste water reuse) as well as for national technical assistance: in Morocco for drafting application decrees (desalinisation, drought management and public domain management), in Algeria on the process for defining protection zones for drinking water abstraction, in Tunisia on rural sanitation strategy for small communities (under 1500 inhabitants) and on groundwater governance (Grombalia aquifer).

The progress of 3 SWIM demonstration projects were also presented and discussed, all around waste water treatment and reuse in Palestine.

A new EU-funded Water & Environment Support (WES) mechanism has been initiated by the European Commission, the procurement process has now been completed. The contract has been awarded to a consortium led by LDK and will start early May 2019, without discontinuity with the current SWIM-H2020 SM finishing end- April 2019. The European Commission also announced a forth coming call for demonstration projects
