Up- scaling and mainstreaming Nature Based Solutions at the basin level

As part of the EUROMED Water Forum, SEMIDE is organising a dedicated session on “Scaling Up and Mainstreaming Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) at River Basin Level”.

The session will explore how Nature-Based Solutions can contribute to addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing the Euro-Mediterranean region, including water scarcity, climate change, ecosystem degradation and biodiversity loss.

While numerous NBS initiatives and pilot projects are already being implemented across Mediterranean countries, their integration into public policies, river basin planning and investment strategies remains limited. Moving from successful pilots to large-scale, basin-level implementation requires enabling policy frameworks, effective governance, sustainable financing, technical expertise and stronger cooperation among stakeholders.

The session will bring together River Basin Organisations, water authorities, policymakers, financial institutions, researchers, technical experts, civil society organisations and ecosystem managers to share practical experiences and discuss the conditions needed to accelerate the uptake of NBS.

Particular attention will be given to:

• Scaling up and mainstreaming NBS in river basin planning and policies;
• Sharing practical experiences and lessons learned from Mediterranean river basins;
• Identifying policy, financial and technical mechanisms to support replication, transfer and upscaling;
• Strengthening regional cooperation and knowledge exchange across the Euro-Mediterranean region;
• Enhancing the integration of ecosystem-based approaches into water, climate and biodiversity strategies.

The session aims to generate key recommendations and practical messages to support the wider adoption of Nature-Based Solutions and strengthen water resilience across the Euro-Mediterranean region.
