A water resilience research and innovation (R&I) strategy
The European Commission has launched a public consultation to gather feedback on the development of a new Water Resilience Research & Innovation (R&I) Strategy, a key initiative supporting the implementation of the European Water Resilience Strategy adopted in 2025. The consultation aims to identify research priorities, innovation needs, emerging technologies, and collaborative approaches that can help Europe address growing challenges related to water scarcity, droughts, floods, pollution, and climate change.
The future strategy will strengthen the role of research and innovation in building a more water-resilient Europe by supporting the restoration of the water cycle, promoting a water-smart economy, and ensuring access to clean and affordable water for all. Particular attention will be given to digitalisation, artificial intelligence, nature-based solutions, sustainable water management practices, and the uptake of innovative technologies across sectors.
The consultation invites contributions from researchers, public authorities, water practitioners, businesses, civil society organisations, and citizens. The results will help shape future European research and innovation priorities and guide investments under upcoming EU funding programmes, ensuring that scientific knowledge and innovative solutions effectively support Europe's long-term water resilience objectives.
Stakeholders are encouraged to share their views and expertise through the European Commission's consultation platform and contribute to defining the research and innovation agenda that will support Europe's transition towards a more resilient, sustainable, and water-secure future.
