European Commission launches consultation on the Digitalisation of the Water Sector
The European Commission has launched a Call for Evidence to support the preparation of the future EU Action Plan for the Digitalisation of the Water Sector, a flagship initiative under the European Water Resilience Strategy. The consultation is open until 24 June 2026 and invites contributions from public authorities, water utilities, researchers, businesses, technology providers, and civil society stakeholders.
The initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of digital technologies across the water sector in order to improve water efficiency, strengthen infrastructure resilience, reduce water losses, and support sustainable resource management. The Action Plan will promote the use of advanced digital solutions, including artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, smart sensors and meters, Earth observation services, and digital twins to enhance decision-making and operational performance.
According to the European Commission, digitalisation has the potential to significantly improve water management across Europe. Smart metering technologies can help reduce water consumption, while digital monitoring systems can improve leak detection, optimise maintenance operations, and provide real-time information for more effective management of water resources.
The upcoming Action Plan forms part of the broader European Water Resilience Strategy, which identifies digitalisation and artificial intelligence as key enablers for achieving a more resilient, sustainable, and competitive water sector. The strategy seeks to strengthen water security, improve the implementation of water policies, and foster innovation to address increasing pressures from climate change, droughts, floods, and growing water demand.
Stakeholders are encouraged to contribute their views and expertise to help shape the future of digital water management in Europe.
