ESA launches a Call for Proposals on the Digitalisation of the Water Sector

The European Space Agency (ESA), through its Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) programme, has launched a new Call for Proposals on the Digitalisation of the Water Sector, inviting companies to develop innovative space-enabled services that contribute to more sustainable and resilient water management. Applications are open until 30 August 2026.

As climate change, population growth, pollution and ageing infrastructure continue to put increasing pressure on water resources, digital technologies are becoming essential to improve the way water is monitored, managed and protected. The call seeks innovative solutions that combine satellite technologies with digital applications to support water utilities, public authorities and other stakeholders.

The initiative focuses on the development of Proof-of-Concept Studies and Pilot Projects addressing challenges such as:

• Water quality monitoring;
• Water availability management;
• Wastewater treatment and sanitation;
• Detection and reduction of water losses and leakages;
• Monitoring of industrial discharges;
• Improving resilience to droughts and floods;
• Monitoring and maintenance of water infrastructure.

Projects must make use of one or more space assets, including Satellite Earth Observation (SatEO), Satellite Navigation (SatNav) and Satellite Communications (SatCom), to deliver commercially viable services with clear benefits for the water sector.

The call has been developed with the support of several partners, including Water Europe, the Global Water Operators' Partnerships Alliance (GWOPA), UpLink – World Economic Forum, and Gap Inc., reflecting a shared commitment to accelerating the digital transformation of water management.
