The Council of the European Union has adopted its conclusions on the European Water Resilience Strategy, marking a major step towards more sustainable and integrated water management across the continent.
The strategy aims to ensure clean and affordable water for all, while strengthening the resilience of ecosystems and the economy in the face of droughts, floods and pollution. Ministers call for restoring the water cycle, preventing pollution at the source, and modernising infrastructure to reduce water loss and improve access to water and sanitation.
“Ensuring water resilience is essential for the security and stability of our societies,” said Magnus Heunicke, Denmark’s Minister for Environment and Gender Equality.
The Council also emphasises the strategic importance of water for competitiveness, food security and crisis preparedness. A mid-term review of the strategy’s implementation is planned for 2027.
