Plan Bleu has released its latest publication, “Towards Sustainable Desalination in the Mediterranean: Integrating Environmental, Economic and Social Perspectives,” a comprehensive report bringing together ten scientific studies conducted by fifteen researchers from across the Mediterranean region. In the context of increasing pressure on water resources, this new volume offers an in-depth analysis of desalination challenges and concrete recommendations to support the sustainable development of the sector.

With Mediterranean populations having grown by 44% since 1990 and renewable water resources projected to decrease by 15 to 35% by the end of the century, the report highlights the strategic role of desalination as an adaptation solution, despite the debates it raises. The authors emphasize the need for a holistic approach that balances human demand, environmental constraints and social equity.

Structured into four key sections, the report explores the contribution of desalination to the Sustainable Development Goals (particularly SDG 6), its economic implications, existing regulatory frameworks—with a specific focus on Algeria—and several innovative integrated approaches, including the “One Health” concept. Among its recommendations, the report presents practical pathways such as energy-desalination synergies, integration into territorial planning, circular economy models and new composite indicators to better address social equity within the sector.

This new publication serves as a valuable strategic tool for policymakers and stakeholders, aligning with the objectives of the Barcelona Convention and the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development. The visual of the press release is also available online.
